ACT on Alzheimer’s St. Paul North East Neighborhoods

“The North East Neighborhoods community has a large 65 and older population, including one of the largest St. Paul contingents of people 80 and older on fixed, low incomes who reside in a single-family dwelling. The community is also home to a large immigrant population, so developing a strong immigrant network is key. It’s a benefit to have such a mixed tapestry in our community. We want our effort to become dementia capable to advance community building among the various cultures here.”

About Our ACT Community

Within the geographical area of the greater east side of St. Paul (District 2 and Ward 6), community efforts to increase awareness and educate about Alzheimer’s were little to none until the North East Neighborhoods Living at Home/Block Nurse Program decided to act. We established our ACT on Alzheimer’s Action Community in 2014. Area partners joining them included a senior social club, the faith community, local government, and a local business.

Snapshot of Activities

  • Building awareness in our community through Dementia Friendly @ Work trainings.
  • Conducting outreach in neighborhood churches, at community gatherings, and with area organizations.
  • Implemented a Memory Cafe/Tuesday Café. The programming has provides meaningful activities to people in this community and a healthy meal.
  • Increasing our outreach in the Hmong community with support from Senator Hawj.
  • Collaborated with the Senator Hawj on a lake garden tour and international luncheon.
