ACT on Alzheimer’s West African Community (Brooklyn Center)

About Our ACT Community

The West African ACT Community was formed in 2016. With no data available on the prevalence and impact of Alzheimer’s and other dementias on the African immigrant community, this ACTion Community has an opportunity to learn how the Dementia Friendly Communities Toolkit can be culturally appropriate for West African immigrants. Organizations represented on the team include West African Family & Community Services, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Camphor United Methodist Church, YMCA at Heritage Park, NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, St. Paul Neighborhoods ACT, Minnesota History Center, Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, Allina Health, and the University of Minnesota.

Snapshot of Activities

  • The team is currently in the Convene phase of the toolkit. The team is focused on trying to have a reasonable representation of the West African community residing in Brooklyn Center. The current 16-member roster includes people from Ghana, Liberia, and Nigeria.
